Speaking of exobiology, advanced intelligent species could design cities otherwise. That could integrate nature and urban structures altogether from a different point of view : fractal.
In the following image you can see an example of fractal-agenced city structures integrating both water and urbanism, both nature and accessibility.
Naming :
In blue : water access for animals and intelligent species (aquatic or not), and ;
In green : natural spaces for animals and city comfort, and ;
In gray : urban spaces for living, and ;
In yellow : core meet up and decisional centers.
You can see that these colorful structures reproduce themselves in shape and size to suit the city size : a fractal — from water and decisional centers and sub-centers to urban forests. All imaged color — on graph — spreading themselves in a continuous and communicating size changing shape (green touching green, and so on, etc).
Indeed such fractal shaped cities are perfect for progressive extension — hence being suitable for Moon or Mars first colonization structures (you can start little and grow bigger) — or structural and urban utility and management purposes : the visible yellow decisional centers.

This way of planning to build cities as fractals could be called "meta-architecture" — or from architecture to "meta-architecture" bringing social to "meta-social" engineering, and so on... Or, a perfect way to begin the colonization of a dead world you want to terraform — Mars ? — especially if you need expensive and limited breathable dome spaces.
The main frame being resizable for further expansion, the fractal shape offer you a wild set of options while conserving all the main fractal tile functions : social, urban, communication, mobility, political, vital infrastructures, core centers, etc. — all being connected with the sub-tiles ones.
Note : From an agricultural point of view, such solution could be envisioned.
