🌊 — The concept of Inflotion
Expressed the 7th January 2024
Inflotion correspond to informational inflation.
It’s characterized by, growth of informational flux (about a matter of in general), leading to :
Monopolization of human's and algorithms time
Infobesity and mental health issues
Growing statistical spread of :
Misinformation (malverted information)
Disinformation (deliberately malverted information)
Propaganda (information spread to manipulate)
Growth of energy consumption
Global annual data growth, from less than a Zetabyte in 2010 to near 200 in 2025 (estimated) — which looks exponential. Source : Statistica, blog.
Definition : Inflotion describes an information inflation characterized by an exponential growth of information, leading to widespread misinformation and cognitive overload.
Consequences : The consequences of inflotion are multiple, ranging from misinformation to the manipulation of public opinion, including mental health problems linked to information overload.
Proposed solutions : The document suggests two main approaches to combat inflotion :
Information tagging : This involves assessing the quality and origin of each piece of information in order to alert users of potential risks through pair review by trusted users, watchdog, fact-checkers, internauts and academics — or with a trusting index.
Information compression : This approach consists of synthesizing essential information on a given subject in order to facilitate understanding and limit the spread of false information.
Most suitable countermeasures, from my point of view :
Îlots de stabilité cognitive (issued from a mail from October 2022 to IRSEM) : roughly, the idea is to tag the informational content of a digital piece of work to warn about its effects or toxicness ? This may be dine with pair review thanks to trusted users who would tag the information, like trusted internautes, academics, experts, watchdogs, fact-checkers — or by creating a trusting index — and which would be visible through a navigator extension, for example. This could work through the vote of the majority — like the favorite promulgated emoji for a post on Facebook — and use the following references :
🧠🔄 🇺🇸 : informational or cognitive influence from [ flag origin ]
🧠🔄💴 : economical influence from [ devise ]
🧠🔄🛐 : religious influence from [ dedicated icon ]
🧠🔄💥 : be careful, strong and negative emotive reactions
🧠🔄🤖 : be careful, written by a bot or an AI
🧠🔄🍑 : be careful, sexual or arousing content
🙈 : risk of denial, reality denial
🙉 : risk of isolationism and, or, paranoia.
🙊 : risk of disgust, Ego disturbances
Compresseurs de savoir (Archipel de pensées, from 2018, see here) : responsibly approaching information, where spreaders of information (Youtubers, writers, historians, scientists, influencers, media and press) do deliberately create reminders of all the essential basis in whatever subject they speak about. The goal is to create redundancies in the endless informational stream we live in to educate whoever would’ve dive into it lately. For example : you speak about the Cold War you summarize what happened in two minutes.
Approaching these questions : what role should social media networks play in fighting information inflation ? How to push them to act ?
Also, education might be used to fight against inflotion.
As an individual, you should cross and verify information, seek trusted sources, remain critical (especially about opinions and distinguish in between), and finally reduce screen time to limit infobesity exposure.
