Here is a picture of a vertical wind turbine, these design are more efficient than the classical ones (see here).
This idea is to merge the two following pictures into one.
Such traffic light installation could be self-sufficient if put on windy roads or high traffic zones through the air-mass moved by vehicles.
Furthermore, with a built-in battery and low consumption LEDs, the whole installation might be set up off-grid.
See more about vertical wind turbines here.
Indeed an off-grid traffic light would not be so useful in cities where advanced synchronization is required between traffic lights (apart for the use of our autonomous design above), because lone points are being replaced by stop signs. However, it could be useful as an all-in-one structure working totally off grid for train rail passage. Let's see :
The system is put in place and solidly grounded, inside you have your LEDs for the traffic light when train arrives, hence a battery charged by the vertical wind turbine — heavily when train pass, otherwise with the wind.
The only constraint for this all-in-one off grid train traffic light is the synchronization with train passages. If you still want to keep it fully off grid you need to find an alternative to plug it into your train alert system. For this particular issue, an infrared captor detecting when the barrer falls down could be a thing (barrer being plugged to your alert grid). Or &U ; through rail vibration captation.
The result is a totally autonomous pod you could install at these train rail passages with no further connecting work needed.
Same goes for street lights, with an intern clock triggering it, you could light up entire roads or cities with off-grid autonome pods during night. Here we would have a battery optimization issue for night use of LEDs, especially if the zone isn't windy. Or for example, on lone desert roads you could use a movement captor or a light captor, to light up the road only when needed (vehicle passing by — or pedestrians).
Note : although a pre-regulated street lights trigger may be useful, a manual may be of great use in case of elasting night caused by volcanic clouds.
